Each time a prominent awards ceremony approaches, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Just some brain-teasers scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
